Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is Sunwest Services a licensed California firearms training facility?
A: Yes. And all coursework is approved by the California State Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS).

Q: What computer specifications do I need to run the program?
A: You will need a high-speed internet connection and Flash plug-in.

Q: Can I log in and out?
A: Absolutely. Our class runs almost eight hours. You’ll need the break. The beauty of the online class is the opportunity to work at your own pace. Please do so.

Q: Whom do I contact if I have a problem?
A: Call Steve at (818) 679-5408, or e-mail him at strgr@sbcglobal.net.

Q: Can I go to work right after I complete the course? How long will it take to get my card?
A: Sorry. You will have to wait until you get your card or be cleared online at the BSIS site. Your card takes four to five weeks. Online BSIS clearance can happen much faster. You can check your status anytime at www.bsis.ca.gov.
Q: What happens if I fail the test?
A: You get three opportunities to pass the Powers of Arrest multiple-choice test. If you don’t pass the second time around, call us and we will work with you directly. If you fail on the third try, you’ll have to retake the class.

Q: Why do we have to write a final essay? On-site courses don’t require essays.
A: We want you to complete the course and show us that you did. This one page will tell us that you paid attention. It’s the payoff for having the luxury of top-flight teaching brought to your home. Lastly, writing is a skill you’ll need. Practicing writing skills, for many of us, is a good thing.

Q: How does the guard card application process work?
A: Register, Log in and begin. Work at you own pace. Our system is extremely user friendly. At the end of the course you email us your one page essay and we mail your paperwork. The essay is brief. First, write about something you learned and why you believe it is important. Then, write a few words about your online guard card class experience. We pay attention to what you write and use your comments to stay sharp. Your paperwork includes: BSIS signed guard card application, completion certificate, and live scan forms. We are available to help every step of the way. In fact, we’ll be in contact with you throughout the process.
Q: How much does the entire guard card process cost?
A: Figure $230- $250. The class is $79 and the state fee for your license is $50. Live scan prices vary. $80 is a ball park price.

Q: How can I find the closest Livescan center?
A: Click on this BSIS link. Then, under Quick Hits, click on Livescan Sites and select a center near you. Go to the center with your signed application. If you plan to acquire a firearm certification, ask the Livescan center for a dual form (for Guard Card and firearm certification) — you’ll save yourself some money and an extra trip.
